Bride-Hunts

Bride-Hunts

By Jin Yu Tian

FOR YEARS my friend, still single at 40, has been searching high and low for an ideal wife. Invariably, his bride-hunts have started promisingly but ended in failure. We often tease him –– how could anyone expect to find a wife that fits him just as he wishes?

His latest attempt began well when, after much computer-aided screening, a girl was found who was his perfect match in every way –– height and weight, birth date and horoscope, career and background. Dating went on smoothly, and parents and friends were happy for the lucky man –– but only briefly, for the pair broke up soon after.

The reason?  On inquiry, we learnt – damn it! –– that it was nothing but the girl’s liking for wearing blue jeans. For half a year, complained my friend, “I've never seen her in a skirt.”

Please don’t get him wrong. My friend is not a skirt chaser – definitely not the Don Juan type. The computer, if anything, was to blame. It had failed to take human whimsy into account.

The man is his mummy’s dear only son. Formerly a good student, now he lives comfortably on a decent income. Surely, he has saved up quite a small fortune, as one can see him sometimes just bring a lunch box from home and eat in the office.

Yet I remember once he split up with a girlfriend after dating her for quite some time, unhappy that she had never paid the bill when they dined out together.

In fact, we would rather feel happy for those girls. We often joke about my friend, saying it will be fortunate for many ladies if he remains a bachelor. He thinks we are wrong, but still hates to part with his dollars.

Yesterday, he was forced by his anxious parents to embark on a flight abroad. But, from among the population of 1.2 billion over there, can he really find a bride that is tailor-made for him?

Congregation Address at CCCU in 2016 / 城大專上學院2016年畢業典禮致詞

Congregation Address at CCCU in 2016

By Ms Jennifer Ng, Principal

Acting President, Honoured Guests, Colleagues, Parents, the Class of 2016, Ladies and Gentlemen:

My greatest joy as the Principal is that every year on occasions like these I see the happy faces of our graduates from the Community College of City University and the beaming smiles of their proud parents and loved ones.  The spirit that is in the air this afternoon, in a venue like this one, is very special.  This atmosphere is contagious, as it spreads from the ones sitting next to you to everyone in this hall.

Year after year we turn out graduates.  This year we have over 2,000.  I am gratified to see that we have produced yet another group of dynamic young people.  You have worked hard, use whatever resources at your disposal, and found the inner strength to forge ahead.  However you got here you have made it.  I am sure there were sleepless nights where you worried about a project presentation the next day, or experienced great anxiety in anticipation of examinations.

By completing your Associate Degrees, you are one step closer to your dreams.  Your young spirits and continuing hard work will propel you ahead in your further studies or careers.   In a way, you mirror the development of our College, which has come a long way since our early days of being a publicly-funded institution.  We have now developed into a self-financing one that can sustain ourselves, with academic programmes that continue to be relevant and appeal to our community.

CCCU is indeed a microcosm of our community, and Hong Kong converges here.  Apart from a majority of local Chinese students, we also have students from the mainland, South Asia, of other nationalities and “returnees” from overseas.

One question frequently asked by graduates is: what now? In our College, 80% of our graduates go on to further studies, with a majority entering the academic programmes at publicly-funded universities in Hong Kong.  With increasing support from the Government, many senior year places are now available for our Associate Degree graduates.

Other AD graduates found their way to top-up degrees offered by many overseas universities or other local, higher education institutions.  Our alliance with the University of Wollongong has enabled some graduates to join one of the three top-up programmes offered by UOW in Hong Kong upon their graduation from AD programmes.

For those seeking employment, most were able to find work within two months of their graduation.

Somewhere ahead in your paths you will encounter various crossroads.  As you graduate, I would like to suggest that you be aware of the importance of finding your own identity in our vast universe.  Finding your own identity, I would contend, is far more important than having acquired an array of “must-have” fashionable gadgets dictated by our status-conscious consumer society.

The values of modesty from ancient times still hold true today and you should hold greed and want in check.  Besides contributing much to the depletion of resources of our planet, conspicuous consumption does not enrich the inner soul.  There is however, more than modesty that you should consider.

Success in life hardly comes about by luck or by chance.  You must adhere to the work ethic and dedicate yourselves wholeheartedly to the tasks at hand, and spend the necessary time to prepare for whatever that is required to reach your objectives.

As you leave us to shape your own futures, you will also need to be adaptable and open-minded, ready to seize opportunities as they present themselves, and maneuver through all the meandering streams in life.

At CCCU, we have always striven to equip our graduates with the requisite skills to survive, with over 2,500 students benefitting from about 140 outside organizations through internships, project sponsorships or visits every year.  On top of that, nearly 1,000 students were able to take part in eye-opening overseas study tours.

In the continuum of life, setbacks and frustrations are common.  So you must gear yourselves for the long haul.  The secret to life, dear graduates, is to endure.  Nelson Mandela spent years in prison before he was able to see the light of day.  Even during those dark days he was not idle.  He used the time to learn the history of South Africa, including those about his enemies, and came out to lead the country through a peaceful change of power.

Surging ahead in life is not something we can learn from textbooks.  Seize the future and make it your own.  Don’t fear it.  2016 may be a defining year when you look back years later.  In Europe, we have the momentous vote of Britain to leave the European Union, and records tumble at the summer Olympics down in Brazil.  In the United States, there is the impending presidential election that will have global repercussions, and of course here in Hong Kong, we have a sea change in our local politics.  We leave the judgment about whether these things are desirable to future historians, but I can say for certain that you graduate in a very special year.

None of what happened in the world so far may impact on you yet.  But for you to graduate today, your families and loved ones have made an impact in different ways.  That impact could be financial, or could be just keeping the house quiet for your studies, letting you enjoy a meal to sustain you, or gentle encouragement to engender your interest in learning.  You will certainly thank them in your own way.

But your success today is also due in no small part to the dedicated teachers and other staff at the College who have devoted their time to give you the best education we can deliver.  To them, both you and I should record a vote of thanks.

I only wish you the best in your journeys ahead.  There will surely be opportunity and peril, but with the skills we imparted to you, I am confident you will steer well.

I recall a few lines of lyrics from a song in one of my favourite movies “The Sound of Music” and would like to give them to you:

Climb every mountain,
Ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow,
Till you find your dream…

涉過一道道溪流;

Ergo I wish you Godspeed.  My sincerest congratulations on your graduation.  May your paths be smooth, your lives fulfilling, and your endeavours be rewarded.

Thank you very much.
